The AEUP participated in both the national and regional elections with 1130 candidates and witnessed that the process was dramatically anti-democratic, lacked the rule of law and not up to international standard. It was neither fair nor free. The result was rigged all across the breadth and length of the country.The 23 May 2010 National and Regional Elections took place based on Political Parties Code of Conduct Proclamations No. 662/2009, of which the members of the Ethiopian Partners Group (EPG) represented in this hall helped initiate and negotiate with the incumbent. The window for introducing legislation that would mandate changes in U.S.-Ethiopia relations has closed for the current session of Congress, so the Washington focus must be on the Obama administration. We have recently met with State Department officials. The U.S. government continues to say all of the right things, expressing dismay over the suppression of democracy and over human rights abuses in Ethiopia, but there is little sign of concrete action. The State Department Ethiopia strategy seems to be focused on maintaining dialogue with the Meles regime and with the opposition, and if possible, exerting pressure behind the scenes on the regime.
Now that EPRDF with the help of the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) has finally declared on 22 June 2010 a unitary system of government, following the robbery it has undertaken of the people’s vote on 23 May 2010 national and regional elections, the question that faces the people at large and all opposition parties in particular is how to go forward in an elite, civilized manner. AEUP would argue that we should continue to pursue the peaceful path it started on eighteen years ago. Any major shift should be in advocacy work for organizing and bringing together the Ethiopian intelligentsia, who have not managed to show willingness to speak to each other ... to eventually organize themselves under a platform of Ethiopianism to gain government power. But first, however, we wish to present briefly the story of the elections in a chronological manner ...
