Djibouti Port Fees Will Fuel Inflation

Ethiopia pays $700 million annually in port fees to the tiny Red Sea state, which has been its main gateway for imports and exports... Djibouti had said the tariff hike would take effect in mid-August. But then the Ethiopian government said the move had been postponed indefinitely after Djiboutian President Omar Ismail Guelleh visited Addis Ababa in July.  New charges had been imposed as of Dec. 1 and is expected to create an inflationary situation.  Ethiopia will pay Djibouti a total of $722.5 million for port services annually. Zenawi’s Revolutionary Democracy Enriches the Few and Impoverishes the Majority

Zenawi is presiding over a massive transfer of wealth from the state/people into the hands of the few, well-connected members of the oligarchy. While doing so, he flashes “GDP” numbers to hoodwink the public into believing the theft is an “economic growth.” ... The lack of economic dynamism is because Zenawi is only tweaking (cooking) a few aspects of the GDP formula since control over the economy by the oligarchy is of prime importance. The fragility of the economy comes from the fact that the GDP expansion relies on exploiting natural resources.  Full Text
