Ethiopia's year-on-year inflation rate rose to 7.4 percent in March from a revised 7.1 percent in February due to higher food, fuel and construction material prices, official data showed on Thursday. "In the recent months, except for cereals, all the other food components have shown a rise in their indices," the Central Statistical Agency said in a statement. Ethiopia's year-on-year inflation rate rose to 8.1 percent in February from 7.6 percent in January due to higher food, fuel and construction material prices, its statistics office said on Wednesday. Inflation in the Horn of Africa nation surged to 64.2 percent in July 2008, driven by record high food and fuel prices, before tough government intervention led to a period of deflation from July to October last year. Ethiopia pays $700 million annually in port fees to the tiny Red Sea state, which has been its main gateway for imports and exports... Djibouti had said the tariff hike would take effect in mid-August. But then the Ethiopian government said the move had been postponed indefinitely after Djiboutian President Omar Ismail Guelleh visited Addis Ababa in July. New charges had been imposed as of Dec. 1 and is expected to create an inflationary situation. Ethiopia will pay Djibouti a total of $722.5 million for port services annually. Traders are also concerned about a reduction of free storage at the port to eight days from 15 days for import cargoes and to three days from 10 days for export cargoes. March 1 (Bloomberg) -- Ethiopia will import 80,000 metric tons of sugar in the 12 months through July 7 to alleviate shortages, Fortune reported. Efforts by the state-owned Ethiopian Sugar Development Agency to limit retail prices to 13.50 birr ($1.01) per kilogram (2.2 pounds) have failed as prices have risen to 18 birr. Ethiopia’s year-on-year inflation rose to 7.6 percent in January from 7.1 percent in December on the back of rising fuel, food and construction material prices, the statistics office said on Thursday. Inflation in the Horn of Africa nation surged to 64.2 percent in July 2008, driven by record high food and fuel prices, before tough government intervention led to a period of deflation from July to October last year. Zenawi is presiding over a massive transfer of wealth from the state/people into the hands of the few, well-connected members of the oligarchy. While doing so, he flashes “GDP” numbers to hoodwink the public into believing the theft is an “economic growth.” ... The lack of economic dynamism is because Zenawi is only tweaking (cooking) a few aspects of the GDP formula since control over the economy by the oligarchy is of prime importance. Ethiopia’s economic freedom score is 51.2, making its economy the 136th freest in the 2010 Index. Its overall score fell 1.8 points as a result of deteriorating trade freedom, monetary freedom, and investment freedom. Ethiopia is ranked 28th out of 46 countries in the Sub-Saharan Africa region, and its overall score is just below the regional average. Full Text
